What is the Rule of 72?
In an effort to educate the next generation, we have a Raleigh local St. David’s School student, Thomas, here to answer what he thinks it means to play by the rule of 72. Thomas gives a clever answer that “everything must be 80’s music.”
Jason explains that if you invest money at 7% it will actually double in ten years – play by the rule of 72!
The rule of 72 mostly comes into play when doing quick mental calculations to reach an approximated value. The rule of 72 is applied to anything that increases exponentially and compounded interest rates. This technique is most accurate for interest rates between 6% and 10%.
